Float Plans and Fishing Logs
When I woke up Sunday morning, it was 9°F. I wasn’t going to go fishing, so I decided to watch some of the Sunday morning fishing shows while planning out the day. On one of the shows the host mentioned something about keeping a log book, which reminded me about my New Year’s Resolution.

Review: Skwoosh’s “Big Catch”

There are very few accessories for your kayak that you’ll use more during a day of fishing than your seat, and probably none that will contribute more to your comfort while you’re on the water. I have low back problems, so after a bit of sitting with my legs out, I generally need to get into shallow water and on my feet for a while. I’ve tried several seats with “traditional” cushions, and always wind up shifting my weight every few minutes to eliminate the “pressure points” under my sitz bones. I was looking for a solution to the problem, and I found Skwoosh.

Up-and-down Okeechobee

CLEWISTON, Fla. – For the past 12 months, the bass fishing on south Florida’s Lake Okeechobee has been out of this world. The 2011 Walmart FLW Tour season opener served as the official coming out party for the Big O and the good times just kept rolling. So when the 2012 FLW Tour schedule was announced, most assumed there would be a repeat of last year’s record-breaking slugfest. But this year, the stars haven’t quite aligned, meaning Okeechobee will likely come back to Earth.

During much of the year, bass fishermen have many choices to make when it comes to where to fish and which lures to use. In spring, when the weather is warmer and bass are spawning or preparing to spawn, the choices are fewer. We know that most of the fish will be in shallow water and that’s where we need to look for them.

This kit comes with two “Mighty Mounts”, a Scotty “241” base, and the hardware to install it on Wilderness Tracks (5/8” track) or ½” wide tracks like the YakAttack “Gear Track”. The kit retails for $30 on YakAttack’s website, and for an extra $5 you get both sets of hardware so you can mount it to any track system. I don’t have a kayak of my own with a track system, so I had to sneak my wife’s Tarpon out to give it a try.

For the Love of a Paddle

For the Love of a Paddle

For a while, I didn’t realize how much I loved my kayak paddle. I knew it was a big step up from my previous paddle, and I really liked it, but never felt like I needed to write about it. An opportunity came along recently that sparked a long chain of events, and really got me thinking. I was fickle at first – perhaps a little wishy-washy-but I can honestly say now that I made the right choice… Werner.

Dudley on the A-rig: What is the true fire behind the fury?

OK guys, it’s time to man up and talk about the real fire behind the fury. Why are some “pros” so dead set on banning Alabama Rigs from tournaments? The answer is simple. They are scared. They are scared that somebody else is going to cash the fat checks they’ve grown accustomed to. And I understand. I’m scared, too. But I’m a pro. I learn new techniques all the time, and I continually work on the old ones to make them more effective. It’s what we do as pros.

Bedding Bass

Bedding Bass

Fishing bass during the spawn, in particular bedding bass – what a touchy subject! If you ask ten bass fishermen their thoughts,  the answers will vary from “never” to “situation” to “always”, and the discussions on the subject sound like presidential debates. Let us delve into the “situation”. Why? Because this is the one I adhere to, and I am going to go over the thought process, baits, and what to look for.

Pro Tips Weekly: Clifford Pirch

Winter is one of my favorite times to drop-shot because the fish tend to stack up in certain places and stay there. Of course, it’s very critical that you pinpoint the locations where fish are holding. When I get to a deep, clear lake, the first places I look are rocky points, bluffs or rocky shorelines because rocks hold a little extra heat even when the water’s cold, and forage such as crawfish also are likely to be in them.

Mini-Doggle: Definition – Not quite a Boondoggle – almost, but not quite.

Kayak fishing for me is all about the adventure. Not knowing what’s around the next corner, the anticipation of an unknown area and what it could hold, the challenge of unlocking those hidden secrets – that’s what draws me to the sport. So it was a no-brainer when Chip Gibson called me and asked if I wanted to fish Mosquito Lagoon. Did I want to join him and Brad? ”Of course!”

Feeling Better Faster!

Feeling Better Faster!

I recently had the privilege of serving as a kayak support paddler for the Tampa Bay Frogman Swim. This was a 3.1 mile (5k) swim across Tampa Bay to raise money for the Navy SEAL Foundation. As I paddled out to stage for the start, a twinge from an old shoulder injury reminded me that I had forgotten to take my usual couple of aspirin to cut down on the discomfort that follows even a shorter day of paddling. My thoughts of a leisurely trip across the Bay went out the window when “my” swimmer, 14-year-old Becca Mann, pulled out the stops and set a blistering 56-minute pace that earned her first place in the women’s division and third overall.

Review: Standard Horizon HX751 Radio

After reading Isaac Miller’s review of the Uniden “Atlantis” VHF marine radio, I decided to share my dramatically different experience with my Standard Horizon HX751. I purchased my radio two seasons ago for around $150. It has accompanied me nearly every time I have ventured out on my kayak. I consider a VHF radio an important part of my safety equipment and although I have not yet had to use it in an emergency, I do feel good knowing it is there and having confidence it will work.

Float n’ Fly for Largemouth Bass

Float n' Fly for Largemouth Bass
When most people hear “Float n’ Fly,” they think smallmouth – and it makes sense. The Float n’ Fly was developed by Charlie and Eddie Nuckols in eastern Tennessee. This technique was aimed at targeting suspended smallmouth and spotted bass when the water temps started creeping into the low 40′s. It works because bait fish struggle to stay alive at these temperatures. What a lot of folks don’t know is this technique also works well for big largemouth.

Winter Fishing Tactics

Winter Fishing Tactics

The winter season is upon us here in Southwest Florida.  This can be a great time of year to fish from the kayak. During the winter months we deal with cold fronts, negative low tides, windy days and cold water temperatures. These conditions can be tough, and I wanted to share my thoughts on a few techniques, lure choices and the best times to be on the water for the top four targeted species in my region – snook, redfish, speckled (or spotted) trout, and flounder.

How to Kayak Fish the Oregon Coast pt 4: Sunset Bay

Further down the Oregon Coast, just on the south edge of Coos Bay, you will find Sunset Bay State Park. Protected by rocks just off shore, this beach launch is usually very calm and easily navigated. Those weary of surf launches usually feel right at ease at Sunset Bay. This little-known location is a great launch with plenty of fishing to be found in the area.

Review: Uniden Atlantis VHF Marine Radio

When you’re on the water, other boats can present hazards for kayak fisherman.  They can also be a lifeline.  Cell phones are great when you find yourself in a hairy situation, but they don’t always work.  That’s where the VHF radio comes in.  It allows for on-the-water communication with other boats on the water, the Coast Guard, and you can also get weather information in case you don’t notice the storm moving in on your location.

Last Kayak Fishing Trip of 2011

Last Kayak Fishing Trip of 2011

For my last kayak fishing trip of 2011,I made the decision to go to a location that I hadn’t visited in quite some time. This New Year’s Eve trip would serve two purposes: finishing off a great year, and hopefully giving me some content for my next magazine article. I made the some calls and rounded up the usual suspects. Chris and Tom would be there, and I would pick Greg up along the way. As we drove over the Skyway Bridge enroute to Fort DeSoto, we could tell it was going to be a good morning. Flat calm conditions greeted us at the launch. We were soon on the water, casting Heddon “Super Spook, Jr.” topwaters into schools of mullet, looking for redfish.

Review: Penn Fierce Spinning Reel

Review: Penn Fierce Spinning Reel

Last winter, I was looking for an inexpensive spinning reel for chasing Stripers on the kayak. By inexpensive, I in no way mean cheap. These reels would be expected to stand up to large fish and salt water fishing from a kayak for at least a few seasons. To fit my requirements, they would need to have a smooth enough drag so the fish can turn and run without pulling hooks, but be stout enough to keep the fish from running back into the rocks.

Fishing Can be Easy in Stained Water with These Two Tricks

Its that time of year. April showers bring about plenty of stained water in our reservoirs, rivers and lakes. For a lot of fisherman, this new influx of debris in the water puts a damper on things. But it doesn’t have to be this way. It can work to your advantage if you know what to look for.

Where to Fish for Crappie in the Early Spring

Now that April is well under way, and the Walleye spawn seems to be winding down, Nebraska anglers will be shifting their attention to early Crappie season. As water temps begin to warm, hordes of these tasty pan fish will begin to move into the shallows, following creek channels, all kinds of cover along shore lines, and possibly featureless flats to find forage. That is what early season Crappie migration is all about, — feeding not spawning.
